(Kenosha, WI) - On Saturday the Milwaukee Barbarians captured the Cup Championship at the Harborfest Sevens Rugby Tournament with 34-0 shutout against MRFC in the semifinals and comprehensive 33-7 victory over the Kenosha Mammoths in the final.
Milwaukee's second team also brought home some hardware as Plate Champions (consolation bracket).
The win marks the third championship for the Milwaukee rugby team this season following similar results at Leinie's 7s (Appleton, WI) and Lighthouse 7s (Fond dub Lac, WI).
Midwest Qualifiers
In addition to these local events, the Barbarians also compete in a series of three Qualifier tournaments where teams from across the Midwest vie for a chance to represent the region at the National Club 7s Championship. The first 2017 Qualifier event was held two weeks ago at the Madtown 7s (Madison, WI).
The Barbarians finished 5th overall at the Madison qualifier with a strong Chicago Lions defense presenting a roadblock to one of the coveted top-four positions. After three pool matches (including the Chicago Lions A and B sides), the Barbarians missed qualifying for the Cup bracket by just a two-try scoring differential.
On deck
The Barbarians continue their summer sevens campaign this Saturday at the Lakefront 7s — the tournament they host at Milwaukee's Veterans Park. The Lakefront 7s is the largest summer rugby event in the nation, and the Barbarians will face stiff out-of-state competition including historically competitive teams such as the Blaze (Chicago, IL), Metropolis (Minneapolis, MN), Griffins (Chicago, IL).
