The Milwaukee Barbarians (4-2-0) overcame a 21-7 halftime deficit on the weekend to defeat Oconomowoc (6-0-0) who sit at the top of the North Chicago-Wisconsin conference.
With an excited home crowd and perfect conditions, Oconomowoc started strongly with two converted tries in the opening six minutes to open a 14-0 lead.
Turning their attention defense, the Barbarians contained the hosts for much of the remaining half and scored their first points with just 2 minutes remaining.
But Oconomowoc replied at the halftime whistle to maintain their 14-point margin. At the break, the hosts lead 21-7.
Offense opens up in second half
Milwaukee kept up the defensive clinic in the second half and also ramped up the offense. With just two minutes remaining in the match, the Barbarians had scored three unanswered tries and a penalty kick to give them an 8-point margin: 29-21 Milwaukee.
Oconomowoc showed their fitness and scored once more at the final whistle, but came up short on the scoreboard. Final score: 29-26 for Milwaukee.
Up next
Due to USA Rugby guidelines regulating clubs that compete in multiple divisions, the Barbarians are not eligible for playoffs which start this coming weekend.
However, the Milwaukee rugby team is hosting the Northwest Woodsmen (7-1-0) from the West Chicago-Wisconsin conference. This will be the club's final home game of the fifteen's season.
