It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our teammate and friend, Andrew Martin — known to all of us simply as “Dre” — who died on May 17 at just 31 years old.
Dre joined the Milwaukee Barbarians in the summer of 2024. He didn’t come to us for glory or trophies, he came for the community. Living just across the street from our home pitch, he made an unforgettable mark on every one of us.
He was a fine rugby player with huge potential. But somehow, he was an even better guy.
On the field, Dre was fierce and fearless. He played with pride, passion, and a physicality that let you know he meant business. And then, as quickly as he’d lock in with that laser focus during a match or training, he’d be back on the sideline lighting up the team with that giant smile of his.
That was Dre. A walking contradiction in the best way — intense and hilarious, serious and silly, confident and kind. His energy was unique, impossible to replicate, and utterly authentic. He was genuine to his core — humble, eager, and always proud to let you know he was from Chicago.
Every time Dre stepped on the pitch, it was with heart. He gave everything. And sharing the pitch with him was a privilege we’ll never forget.
Dre was more than a teammate. He was a brother. A warm man, gone much too soon — but never forgotten.
Rest easy, Dre. We’ll carry your spirit with us every time we lace up.
