It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our teammate and brother, Michael Rudy, who died this week of natural causes at his home in Milwaukee.
Rudy first made his mark on the pitch during his college years at Saint Louis University, where he stood out as a dedicated and skilled player. After graduation, he earned recognition with the Chicago Griffins, including being named Rookie of the Year.
In 2003, he joined the Milwaukee Westside Harlequins, later becoming a proud member of the Milwaukee Barbarians. He was a loved and respected teammate who anchored the second row with physicality, presence, and an imposing stature that made him a constant challenge for opponents.
Rudy was known for his wild-card intensity — a fierce competitor whose physical style of play lifted those around him. He embodied grit, determination, and an edge that made him unforgettable to both teammates and rivals.
Off the field, he carried that same zest for life. He was often found at the center of late-night poker games, quick with a laugh and always ready to stir up the action.
His love for rugby never left him after his playing years were done. He remained a Sustaining Member of the Barbarians, sponsored team jerseys, and proudly cheered from the sidelines with his son Brayden by his side.
Rudy also played a pivotal role in helping the club secure major sponsorship support, including a significant partnership with Samuel Adams in 2016, showing his dedication went beyond the pitch and into ensuring the future of the game he loved.
Above all, Rudy leaves behind his beloved son Brayden, as well as a family that extends far beyond blood — his teammates, fellow alumni, and the entire rugby community who shared life with him on and off the field.
Mike’s memory will live on in the club he supported, the teammates who loved him, and the son who carries his spirit forward.
Rudy, we love you and will see you on the big pitch in the sky. Just don’t get sin-binned before we get there!
