Barbarians pull away in second half against Lincoln Park to maintain perfect record

Despite a lopsided scoreline, the Milwaukee Barbarians met a stiff challenge in visiting Lincoln Park on Saturday for a Division 3 match-up.

The Barbarians won the match 28-0 and the victory kept alive their hopes for a perfect season as their record extends to 4-0-0.

The result also cements the Milwaukee rugby team in second place in the Northern bracket of the Men’s Divison 3 Wisconsin-CARFU Midwest conference. At 18 points, the Barbarians are 2 points behind the Celtics of Green Bay who are also undefeated but have 2 extra bonus points over 4 matches.

The match started very slowly as both teams looked for their rhythm in the inclimate conditions. Milwaukee took the lead early with a penalty kick (Huschen) but was immediately put back on the defensive as Lincoln Park scored a try and took the lead 5-3.

The lead changed hands again at the 25-minute mark as Huschen slotted another penalty making it 6-5 for the hosts.

The rest of the first half was mostly a stalemate as both teams were let down by handling errors and a missed penalty kick by Lincoln Park.

But shortly before halftime, Milwaukee winger James DeYoung dotted down for a try to give the home team a little breathing space going into the break: 11-5 Barbarians.

Milwaukee continued to build on this momentum in the second half and consistently capitalized on opportunities starting with a third penalty for Huschen.

This was followed with a try by Kovisto (conversion by Huschen) and the match started to look out of reach  for the visitors with a score of 21-5 with 15 minutes remaining.

The nail in the coffin however was a third try for the Barbarians by center and goal kicker Huschen who converted his own score.

To their credit, Lincoln Park continued to press into the dying minutes of the match but were rebuked by the Barbarian defense at every opportunity until the final whistle. Score: 28-5 win for the Barbarians.
