Before rugby, Dan was already a gifted athlete, wrestling and playing football and baseball in high school. But by age 30, he was looking for something new — and rugby entered his life in unforgettable fashion.
While rock climbing at Devil’s Lake with his brother, 2009 Hall of Fame inductee Davey Brienzo, Dan took a fall. Davey caught him on the rope and famously joked, “Promise me that you’ll start rugby or I will let go.” Poorly timed as the joke may have been, Dan agreed — and soon after joined the Harlequins.
That decision proved to be a transformative one for both Dan and the club. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dan became a key figure in the team’s on-field success. He served as coach in 1979 and established himself as one of the club’s premier forwards, earning Most Valuable Forward honors in 1979, 1980, and 1981.
His impact was recognized even more broadly when he was named Rugger of the Year in both 1980 and 1981, becoming the first player in club history to earn that honor in back-to-back seasons. He later served as Team Captain from 1983 through 1985, continuing to lead by example during an important era for the club.
Dan’s excellence extended beyond club competition. He earned 29 matches with the Wisconsin Select Side, a testament to the respect he commanded at the representative level. All told, he played 16 years for the Harlequins, from 1976 through 1991.
Off the pitch, Dan contributed just as meaningfully. He served as Treasurer in 1979 and as yearbook photographer in 1980 and 1981, helping preserve club history while also helping guide the organization. He toured Ireland and Wales in 1977 and the Canadian Rockies in 1987, and he welcomed many touring players into his home over the years, embodying the hospitality and camaraderie that define the club.
Since retiring from the game, Dan has remained a familiar and valued presence — attending matches, cheering on the team, pouring beers, and cooking for players.
Dan joins the Hall of Fame for his remarkable playing career, outstanding leadership, and decades of commitment to the club community.
